Delhi Metro train arriving at the station

Delhi runs on the Metro. As a student at Jamia Hamdard, mastering the local transport network will save you thousands of rupees and countless hours. But for freshers living in Tughlakabad Extension, the map can be incredibly deceiving.

The biggest rookie mistake? Assuming that the "Tughlakabad Metro Station" is the closest station to Tughlakabad Extension. It is not. If you get off there, you are in for a long, expensive auto ride. Here is the ultimate, localized transport guide to getting around from Gate 6.

1. The Closest Station: Govindpuri (Violet Line)

For 90% of your journeys across Delhi (whether heading to Lajpat Nagar for shopping, or Central Secretariat to switch lines), Govindpuri Metro Station is your lifeline.

  • Distance from Gate 6: Approximately 3.5 to 4 Kilometers.
  • How to get there: Step out onto the main MB Road (Mehrauli-Badarpur Road). You will instantly find dozens of shared e-rickshaws and auto-rickshaws shouting "Govindpuri! Govindpuri!".
  • The Cost (2026 Rates): A shared e-rickshaw or auto will charge you exactly ₹15 to ₹20 per seat. If you book a private auto, they will demand ₹60 to ₹80.
  • Time Taken: 15 to 20 minutes, depending on the traffic near the Batra Hospital signal.

Why NOT Tughlakabad Metro Station?

The Violet line does have a station named "Tughlakabad," but it is located much further down the MB Road near the Badarpur border. Traveling there from Gate 6 takes longer and costs more. Always navigate towards Govindpuri.

2. The Yellow Line Gateway: Saket & Malviya Nagar

If you need to travel towards Gurgaon (for internships or corporate events) or Hauz Khas, taking the Violet Line all the way to Central Secretariat just to change trains is a massive waste of time. Instead, you should cut across South Delhi to the Yellow Line.

  • The Stations: Saket Metro Station or Malviya Nagar Metro Station.
  • How to get there: Cross the MB Road from Gate 6. You can take a direct DTC bus or a shared auto heading towards "Lado Sarai" or "Saket."
  • The Cost: Shared autos charge around ₹30 to ₹40. DTC non-AC buses are ₹10-₹15 (and free for female students with the Pink Ticket).
  • Time Taken: 25 to 35 minutes.

3. The Inside Lanes: The E-Rickshaw Ecosystem

Tughlakabad Extension itself is a massive network of lanes. Walking from the main MB Road to Gali 40 in the peak of summer with heavy groceries is exhausting. Enter the E-Rickshaw.

The main e-rickshaw stand is located right opposite Hamdard Gate 6. These drivers run fixed routes deep into TKD Extension and Sangam Vihar. A shared ride from the main road to the inner galis (like Gali 34 or 36) costs a fixed ₹10. They operate from 6:00 AM until about 11:30 PM.

4. Late Night Travel and Safety

If you are arriving at Govindpuri Metro Station after 10:30 PM, the shared autos begin to thin out, and the ones remaining will try to overcharge you (demanding ₹50 per seat).

Safety Tip: For female students traveling late at night, we highly recommend bypassing the shared autos and booking an Ola or Uber Auto directly from the metro station to your flat's Gali. It will cost around ₹80-₹100, but it offers GPS tracking and drops you directly at your building's gate, avoiding the need to walk through the lanes at midnight.
