You cannot survive medical or pharmacy school at Jamia Hamdard purely on hostel mess food and study sessions. When the weekend hits, you need an escape. Just 15 minutes away from Tughlakabad Extension lies South Delhi’s "Mini Bengal"—Chittaranjan (CR) Park.
CR Park is not just a residential colony; it is a cultural and culinary powerhouse. For a student on a budget, it offers the most authentic, hygienic, and incredibly cheap street food in the city. Whether you are craving a spicy Kathi roll, steaming momos, or rich Bengali sweets, here is your ultimate Gate6Rentals student food trail.
1. The Commute: TKD to CR Park
Getting to CR Park from Jamia Hamdard is fast and student-budget-friendly.
- The Auto Route: Step out of Gate 6 onto the MB Road. You can hail a direct auto to CR Park Market No. 1 or 2. It usually costs about ₹60-₹80. Split among three friends, it's less than ₹30 per head.
- The Shared Route: Take a shared e-rickshaw to Govindpuri Metro Station (₹15). From there, cross the road and take a shared auto directly into CR Park (₹15). Total cost: ₹30.
2. Market No. 1 vs. Market No. 2
CR Park is divided into several markets, but as a student foodie, you only need to care about two of them.
Market No. 1: The Roll Hub
This is where the evening crowds gather. It is famous for its dense cluster of Kathi Roll stalls, momo vendors, and fresh juice shops. It’s slightly more chaotic but packs the best punch for spicy street food.
Market No. 2: Sweets & Groceries
Market 2 is famous for the renowned Bengali sweet shops, fresh fish markets (if you have a kitchen in your flat!), and authentic Kolkata biryani joints. It’s a bit more relaxed than Market 1.
3. The Ultimate ₹300 Food Trail
You don't need to visit expensive cafes in Greater Kailash to have a good time. Here is what you must eat in CR Park on a student budget:
- The Kolkata Kathi Roll: Head straight to Market 1. There are 4-5 stalls side-by-side (like Raju Dada's or Kolkata Hot Kathi Roll). A double-egg, single-chicken roll wrapped in a flaky paratha will cost you around ₹80 - ₹100 and will keep you full until tomorrow morning.
- Phuchka (Pani Puri): Do not call it Golgappa here! The Bengali Phuchka is larger, filled with mashed potatoes and spiced tamarind water. A plate of 6 pieces costs around ₹30 - ₹40. Find the vendors standing at the edges of Market 1.
- Momos & Ghugni: You can find excellent chicken and veg momos steaming on the corners of Market 1 (₹60/plate). For something different, try Ghugni—a spiced yellow pea curry served with onions and chillies (₹40).
- The Sweet Finish: Walk over to Market 2 and visit Annapurna Sweets or Kamala Sweets. You absolutely must try their Mishti Doi (sweet yogurt served in earthen pots) and a classic spongy Rasgulla. Dessert will cost you around ₹50.
4. Why CR Park is Great for Students
Beyond the food, CR Park offers a very specific vibe that students love.
Firstly, it is incredibly safe. Because it is a tight-knit residential community, you can walk around the markets late into the evening (up to 10:30 PM) without feeling insecure. Secondly, the presence of numerous parks and tree-lined avenues makes it a great place to simply sit, chat with friends, and digest your food after a heavy exam week.
During the festival of Durga Puja (usually October), CR Park transforms entirely. As a Jamia Hamdard student, this is a cultural spectacle you must experience at least once during your degree.
